Been waking up at 4am lately, and not being able to get back to sleep. Weird, but production inducing...

https://www.discover.com/issues/mar-06/cover/

Read this article yesterday and was so excited I couldn't read fast enough; like watching the climax of a thriller. Too much coffee? Have I passed into some super-nerd micro-geek realm? Maybe Discover's just getting really good at their 'pop shock science' -- the end of the world, bursting methane bubbles, subduction tsunamis...blah...blah... Maybe I'm just spoiled by Science News. What's yalls prognosis? interesting? or should I spend more time boozing and less time on homework.

I discovered today that Mac allows me to french braid her tail.

In all it's gory....I mean glory:

This picture highlights the beautiful 'jointy-ness' of the material. You can almost imagine the sinew...pulling bone against bone (actually, to be correct, it's ligaments that do this)....and gobbling up the fleshy person in the chair....Mmmm cow desk.

Go on, click for the close-up.

2/3/06 04:43 am - Fun w/catagories

Posting in response to a friends recent boy-blogs. We'll call her MJ [wink], since my posts aren't locked. When all else fails use pseudoscience to falsly label your 'rejects' as such. Case in point: this fun w/genetics dichotimization I found:

                                          The Genetic Origins of Personality
                                                      by David Schlinkert

Recent research has revealed that many character traits are genetically predetermined. Although nurture can distort or in extreme cases, subvert, genetics; close correlation's between gene pairs and social development have been observed. This paper deals with the genetics behind the eternal questions: Why are all men jerks and why are nice guys so boring? The reader may note that these two questions are mutually exclusive, but imperial observations have lead the researchers to believe all women have asked these questions and firmly believe they are both valid. Our research shows there are two gene pairs controlling the major character traits in men: the jerk/nice pair and the interesting/boring pair. There are sixteen possible combination of these pairs. A man can be homogeneous for either trait, for each gene pair. It is obvious that 25% of men are total jerks, and 25% are totally boring, but we will clarify below.

                                    Father's contribution                     Mother's contribution
                                       j - jerk                                         J - Jerk
                                       n - nice                                        N - nice
                                       i - interesting                                I - interesting
                                       b - boring                                    B - boring
jJiI homogeneous for jerk, homogeneous for interesting 6.25%
These are the REAL MEN. Most attractive to women, highly successful in life. Frequently have careers they can't talk about, and incidents they won't admit to. Always one steps ahead of the law and past lovers. Rarely marry, unless in politics, but frequently leave children behind to be raised by lesser males.

jNiI & nJiI heterogeneous for jerk/nice, homogeneous for interesting 12.5%
Statesmen, chief executives, innovators in all fields. Married to very protective women; who put up with a lot of hassles, but enjoy the good parts.

jJiB & jJbi homogeneous for jerk, heterogeneous for interesting/boring 12.5%
Frequently in Sales, can talk to anyone and be convincing. Highly perceptive and will talk you into doing what they want. Bails out once the sex is over or the commission check is cashed. Doesn't do anyone or anything long-term.

jNiB, nJiB, jNbI, nJbI heterogeneous for jerk/nice, heterogeneous for interesting/boring 25%
Typically has common interests, but talks about job and sports too much. The largest group in the population, but too inconsistent to amount to much. Marries early and often.

nNiB & nNbI homogeneous for nice, heterogeneous for interesting/boring 12.5%
Marries late, if at all, mainly because women rarely notice them. Has a life outside of work, but you'll never listen long enough to find out. Devoted to wife and family, when married. Nice guys at all levels that do 90% of everything necessary to keep the world going.

jJbB homogeneous for jerk, homogeneous for boring 6.25%
Flamers that can't stop promoting themselves. "No" isn't in their vocabulary. Generally get their way by wearing down the opposition. Lawyers, minor politicians, marketing dweebs.

jNbB & nJbB heterogeneous for jerk/nice, homogeneous for boring 12.5%
Frequently bright, always boring. Their job is their life. Engineers and computer geeks.

nNbB homogeneous for nice, homogeneous for boring 6.25%
Stable as a rock, has long-term employment, works well with others. Accountants.

nNiI homogeneous for nice, homogeneous for interesting 6.25%
Cultured, educated polymaths. Equally at home at the opera and the wilderness. Riveting conversationalist, great cook. Kind, loving, committed. Gay

Awsome! "Frequently in sales".... "Gay"...... I only wonder how I've been stuck w/all jJbB's if they only make up 6.25% I should put out an ad "Seeking a jNbB or nJbB with own life, who'll let me have mine. Bonus for paying off my student loans."

Now I shall return to 'real' genetics homework. [grumble]

You motivated me to post, Kimberly.

Plus, in the past when I had things i needed to post, I couldn't figure out how. So this is a test. To figure out how to do this linky picturey thing.

And, of course, I shall make it about my kitties, wonderful kitties.

Plus, I was a little worried about Becky's friend not liking my cats. I need to put this out there to brainwash the few people I do talk with. 'Cause MY cats are different. I raised them different. It's this passage from Jack Cohen (that I've read to you already Kimberly-why-can't-we-shorten-your-name-it's-too-long) about domesticated animals (when pressured, of course) aquiring what we think of as strictly-human traits. My cats certainly do, and I don't think it's all in my head, what with environmental pressure being the only 'check' to evolution's 'balance.' I changed their environment, and made them into people/cats.....[evil laugh] Except I kinda turned into a people/cat too. [boo]

Anyways, here are my baby cats. They came from my parents' neighbors' barn. I nursed them and raised them up and now they are gone. (Let's see if I can figure this out)

9/17/05 10:46 pm - Hilarity

Funniest thing I heard on my 72 hr.journey back home:

"Oh good...the sun's out!"

Said by the very sweet old lady sitting next to me....

-as we cruised along high above the clouds-

All I could think, as I sobbed into the tissues she gave me (I was really exhausted) and ate her airplane granola bar, was, "Yes, THANK GOD THE SUN'S OUT!" AHHH the fresh perspective of old people never fails to amaze me.

Plus, I scored a free airline ticket to anywhere Alaska Air flies.
